Design Racing!
Here
we have the Prototype S1D Racer. The first flights proved to be very stable
and easy to fly. Note the colour... This model was not painted after the fuselage
was pulled out of the mould. Instead the mould was painted with red paint
before the glass work was laid up. There is a join line that isn't really
visible in this photo but when it comes to painting the finish is good enough
for me. Don't be fooled by the number 1 on the wing tip either as it only
means it was the first one ever built..... :) Oh by the way I finished last
at the first event held due to engine problems, but hey that's all part of
racing. It pays to have these things sorted out before an event.

Tuning
the model is very important for racing.... A little on the lean side and you
will either wreck your engine or the engine will die in the middle of a race
or both! Too rich and you aren't going to get the best race time you wanted.
The best tune is a fraction rich so that you get the best performance in the
air but keeping the engine reliable for the duration of the race. Consistency,
good flying and times on the board is what wins races!
This
is the second model out of the mould and was built by Brenton from the Maryborough
Club. He only took a week to get it to the flying stage so we all know how easy
it was hey Brenton...... Actually he was lucky to get away with a radio problem
that caused minor damage. The damage has since been repaired... Brenton did
well finishing 3rd overall for the first event! Also it was the first time he
has raced Pylon... Goes to show you that anyone can do well.... :)
This
S1D model belongs to Frank Harrod..... Yes I know "IT'S PINK!"
But
I wouldn't go calling Frank a SISSY because of his choice of colour! You haven't
seen how big he is! Best off to leave that one alone... Besides you might
be eating your words if he beats you in the race as he is a very good pilot
and has won most of the sport events for the past couple of years so there
is much to be learned from this guy... He finished 2nd at the first S1D racing
event in Maryborough.
This
Model belongs to Karl Harrod... Karl is mostly responsible for getting S1D
racing off the ground so to speak.... He helped me design the S1D and is pushing
this new class of racing like he is possessed or something like that. He even
told the guys that fly FAI that they had to have them.... Mind you they did
say they had a ball of a time racing the S1D.... Karl WON the first ever S1D
racing event in Maryborough.
Here
we have Warren Hathaway's S1D on one of the starting mats before a race...
Warren was the only flier to use an O.S. engine on the weekend but did quite
well.... You just can't beat those O.S. engines for reliability! This is one
of the reasons he didn't finish last like me... But no matter my S1D now has
an O.S. on the front because it looks like my Super Tigre has died.... Warren
travelled from Townsville to race with some other guys... These guys are really
dedicated to Pylon... Nice colour scheme too Wazza!

This
is Mick Dalman's S1D.... This model was also fast on the day but Mick had a
problem with flying inside the poles? I think Mick was just there to race on
the weekend.... I don't think he cared where he finished up, he just wanted
to be among the action.... As you can see Mick has put allot of thought into
the colour scheme for his plane.... :) But it was easy to see in the air which
is a must so you can see where to put it around the poles.... Oh well at least
he painted a canopy on it..... :)

Here
is the first ever S1D racers.... Six in total..... This photo was taken before
the event was held just in case one or a few of them crashed during the weekend...
There were no mishaps I'm glad to say... The event did how ever spark some interest
with other fliers on the weekend, and Karl has now got 10 more kits to get out....
If they all turn out at the next event there will be some fantastic S1D Racing....
