There is nothing difficult about setting up your S1D Racer, but there are a few things that you can do to make your racer fly around the Pylon Racing Course allot easier and smoother by following some simple setup rules....
Centre of Gravity
Setting up the S1D's C/G for normal sport flying is very easy but this might not be the best setup for racing... Try not to keep the C/G too far forward... You should try balance your S1D approximately 80 - 90mm from the leading edge of your wing.... You might think this looks a little far back, but a rearward C/G will allow your model to turn better without bleeding off to much speed.... Also, using a rearward C/G you will notice that your plane will seem to fly lighter and you won't have any problems with running out of elevator upon landing....(this is a problem that some people have and don't realise why)... Don't be afraid to put your C/G back a little....
Lateral Balance
Balancing your S1D laterally (wing tip to wing tip) is almost a must if you want your model to fly around the Pylons with ease! What happens if one of your wing tips is heavier than the other?....... When you apply the elevator, the effect of Gravity (G-Force) increases the weight of your model considerably.... That means that your one heavy wing tip becomes increasingly heavier than the other wing tip and forces your plane to either roll out of a turn or roll into a turn... This is not recommended for Racing, as you can imagine...... You don't need you racer rolling onto its back in the middle of a tight turn, and spreading it all over the deck now do you?.... If you balance your plane laterally you will avoid this problem, and you will find that your S1D Racer will turn like it's on rails.....
Control Throws
Setting up the control throws on the ailerons and elevator are also vital when it comes to racing.... You may think that you need heaps of control throws for racing so you can get around those tight turns etc.... But it is quite the opposite!!!... Setting the control throws so that your elevator is quite soft is the preferred method... This allows you to fly much smoother without over doing the control inputs from you..... Most people racing set their elevator up so that a nice turn around number 1 Pylon is full back stick on the transmitter.... The smoother you fly the better race times you are going to get, so you have to set up the plane accordingly..... The same also goes for the ailerons..... Don't have these setup too soft though as you may need them to get you out of trouble..... Too much aileron and the plane will be very hard to place at the best angle for a good turn.... Everyone tends to over roll an aircraft with sensitive ailerons, so set these up fairly soft, but still keeping good control.... You should not have to worry too much about your rudder.... You will usually only need rudder for takeoffs and to trim you plane in flight.....
Well that just about covers the S1D setup for Racing..... Get heaps of practice with these setups and you will do well when it comes time for racing.... Remember when all else fails.......
